Robert Walsh of New Haven enlisted in Company E on October 23, 1861 and died at Ship Island, Mississippi on April 14, 1862. He was re-interred at the Chalmette National Cemetery outside New Orleans (Grave 318). Ship Island and Fort Massachusetts still stand today although the island has been split in two and heavily damaged by hurricanes Camille and Katrina
As related in Murray’s History ( pg 90 ):
Shortly before the Ninth left Ship Island, Private Robert Walsh of Company E, was accidentally killed, being shot through the heart. He belonged in New Haven, and was a good soldier and comrade. His death was much regretted. |
